The Centre for Water Informatics & Technology at SBASSE, LUMS is extremely excited to announce the launch of a webinar series intended to celebrate distinguished works in ‘Water Systems Research’. The seminars will be targeted towards researchers and technical experts working in water resource systems and will be delivered by scientists who have produced acclaimed research in the field. Securing the future of our water resources is becoming less of a problem of scarcity and more of a problem of effective management of what we already have. We strongly believe that this can be achieved only by adopting a systems perspective on water that takes into account the intricate linkages connecting the water system with food, energy, technology, and society. 'Best of Water Systems Research' is aimed at propagating the science and techniques of exactly this approach to sustain our water resources. In this series, WIT will be inviting top researchers who have applied systems theoretic methods to address real problems in water resource management.

The first talk will be delivered by Dr. Andrew Bell from Boston University on his work on participatory irrigation management in Punjab, Pakistan. Other confirmed speakers include Dr. Murugesu Sivapalan from UIUC, Dr. Ariel Dinar from UC Riverside, Dr. Grey Nearing from UC Davis, and Dr. Michael Mitchell from CSU Australia. Many other esteemed researchers are (and will be) invited and we are very excited to be able to learn collectively from their wealth of experiences. 

The talks will (mostly) be delivered bi-weekly on Wednesday evenings. A tentative schedule for the webinars can be found at here, while you can register here. The webinars will be streamed via zoom with the opportunity to interact with speakers during the Q&A after the presentation ends. A link for attending will be sent via email to registered individuals. Colleagues who register once can attend all future talks without the need to register again. 

The first talk will be delivered by Dr. Andrew Bell from Boston University and is titled: "Finding the next steps forward for IBIS water governance". The talk is scheduled for 6:00-7:00 pm PKT on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 and will be moderated by Dr. Talha Manzoor, Assistant Professor, Center for Water Informatics & Technology. 

About the speaker: Andrew Bell studies livelihoods and resource decision-making. including domains of irrigation, pest management, ecosystem services, technology adoption and migration. Most of his work applies survey and experimental tools (games, high-frequency smart-phone based surveys) to identify and model behaviour; and agent-based models to understand what these behaviours imply for system-level outcomes under scenarios of environmental change. He received his PhD (2010) in Natural Resource Management from the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE, now SEAS), also MASc in Environmental Engineering from Waseda University and BASc in Environmental Engineering from the University of Waterloo.

Biography:

Dr. Kamran Rehan is the USTC & CAS-PIFI Joint Postdoctoral Fellow, working at the University of Science and Technology of China. He obtained his PhD in Atomic and Molecular Physics from the Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology (APM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2020. During his educational career, he won the CAS-TWAS fellowship, and has received many other national and international awards.

The Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering is honored to host Dr. Donna Strickland, Nobel Laureate in Physics (2018), as a speaker for the seventh Abdus Salam Annual Memorial Lecture.

Energizing light beyond the luminance of a candle not only cleared the way for explorers on land, sea and air, but also for the explorers inside the laboratory. It begat an era of optics, slewing passion laden explorers towards studying spectacular phenomena like spectroscopy.

Fast forward to the 1980s, a similar leap was in the making. Scaffolded by hard work and a drive to create a high intensity optical laser, Dr. Donna Strickland successfully invented the ‘chirped pulse amplification’ technique, ushering in a new era of research in optics that led to a new understanding of laser-matter interactions, development of new machining techniques that are now used in laser eye surgery and micromachining techniques used in the production of glass used in smartphones.

Donna Strickland is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo and is one of the recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for developing chirped pulse amplification with Gérard Mourou, her PhD supervisor at the time. They published this Nobel-winning research in 1985 when Strickland was a PhD student at the University of Rochester.

Brief biography of Professor Strickland:

Donna Strickland is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo and is one of the recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for developing chirped pulse amplification with Gérard Mourou, her PhD supervisor at the time. They published this Nobel-winning research in 1985 when Strickland was a PhD student at the University of Rochester.

Strickland earned a B.Eng. from McMaster University and a PhD in optics from the University of Rochester. Strickland was a research associate at the National Research Council Canada, a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and a member of technical staff at Princeton University. In 1997, she joined the University of Waterloo, where her ultrafast laser group develops high-intensity laser systems for nonlinear optics investigations. Strickland served as the president of the Optical Society (OSA) in 2013 and is a fellow of OSA, SPIE, the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Society. She is an honorary fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Physics and an international member of the US National Academy of Science. Strickland was named a Companion of the Order of Canada.

This year the 2020 Nobel prize in Physics is shared by Sir Roger Penrose - a Mathematician, Mathematical Physicist and Philosopher of Science whose work has had a profound influence across disciplines. To honour his legendary work, his student, Professor Asghar Qadir was invited for an online talk. Professor Asghar Qadir is a distinguished Pakistani mathematician and one of Penrose’s first students.

A black hole is a region of spacetime where gravity is so strong that even light cannot escape from it. Roger Penrose used ingenious mathematical methods in his proof that black holes are a direct consequence of Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity.

In January 1965, ten years after Einstein’s death, Roger Penrose proved that black holes really could form and described them in detail; at their heart, black holes hide a singularity in which all the known laws of nature cease. His ground-breaking article is still regarded as the most important contribution to the general theory of relativity since Einstein.

About the Speaker: Professor Asghar Qadir’s interests lie in aspects of Mathematical Physics and the Theory of Relativity and he specializes in Twistor Theory. He is a prolific author and has authored several internationally and nationally published books in Mathematical Physics, journal articles in Mathematical Physics as well as Economics. He has mentored several graduate students throughout his career and served on important administrative positions, which include being the Chairman of the Mathematics Department of QAU and later the Dean of Faculty of Natural Sciences at the same university. His contributions to the field as well as the academia have earned him numerous awards which include, but are not limited to: Fulbright Hayes award Hayes award for 1978-79 and Senior Fulbright Fellowship for 1986-87, the Al Khwarizmi First Prize for Mathematics in 1995, Pakistan Academy of Sciences Gold Medal in 1996, Sitara-i-Imtiaz of Pakistan in 1999, ISESCO Award for Mathematics 2003, Distinguished National Professor of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan in 2004 (for life), and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz of Pakistan in 2008. Professor Qadir has also authored popular articles and a literary criticism paper about “Popular Science and Science Fiction”. He also possesses a flare for writing poems in Urdu and English.
