In this talk the speaker will introduce the idea of quantum imaging as a multi-parameter estimation problem, which allows higher benchmarks than conventional Abbe or Rayleigh limit. The talk will show how we can achieve super-resolution in the imaging of distant classical objects by exploiting the greater flexibility of optical interferometers in tailoring the right observables that give us the maximum amount of information about the objects.

Mansoor is currently serving as Scientist Emeritus at NASA. Previously he served as Associate Director of the Astrophysics Projects Division as well as the Program Manager for the Physics of the Cosmos program and the Cosmic Origins program at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

Mansoor has spent most of his career in serving the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) program in different capacities, including the Flight Operations Manager and the Project Manager for HST operations. He has participated in all but one Hubble repair missions. During a short stint away from HST, Mansoor has served as the Mission Manager for the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory De-Orbit mission, the Deputy Project Manager for the James Web Space Telescope and as the Project Manager for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission, a collaborative endeavor between NASA and the European Space Agency with the goal to verify Einstein’s theory of relativity by detecting gravitational waves generated by massive objects in our universe, as predicted by Einstein.

Mansoor Sb commonly known as  Moonie grew up in Peshawar and studied in PAF College Lower Topa before migrating to the US in 1970. Mansoor has a B.S degree from University of Maryland and M.S. from George Washington University, both in mechanical engineering. He has received the NASA Group Achievement Award, 2001; the Goddard Space Flight Center Group Achievement Award, 1995; and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, 1995.  Mansoor has been a member of the US government Senior Executive Service (SES) in 2007.

Another good thing about him besides his scientific endeavors he loves to direct movies. he has one movie named  BHOOL and 20 short movies up till now. Most of the films have been showcased in local film festival two of them have received audience choice award for best  short films.

Dr. Syed Zeeshan Ali is currently Director of Technology at Flusso Ltd., a spin-off company from the University of Cambridge. He graduated from GIK Institute, Pakistan, in 2003 with a bachelors in electronic engineering. He finished his PhD in 2007 at the University of Cambridge, UK, focusing on MEMS based gas sensor and was then a research associate at the University of Cambridge. He joined Cambridge CMOS Sensors Ltd. in 2010 (which became part of AMS AG in 2016) where he worked on the development of gas sensors and infrared emitters & detectors, before joining Flusso in 2019 to work on MEMS based flow sensors. He is an inventor on 20 patents and patent applications , and an author or co-author of more than 80 publications in international journals and conference proceedings and 2 book chapters.

Babar Qureshi is a theoretical physicist whose interests are focused on quantum field theories and quantum gravity

In a country starved of energy options, nuclear power appears a very attractive choice with an offer of concentrated energy with very little fuel cost. But it entails grave risks on account of the inherent radioactivity. Serious accidents can happen and have happened. Avoiding accidents increases the cost of installation as well as of electricity production. In addition, cost of dismantlement after the lifetime is nearly as much as the cost of installation. The spent fuel remains highly radioactive for a long time, and no one knows a good way of its disposition. The option of nuclear electricity is, therefore, a matter of careful cost and benefit analysis.
How is Pakistan handling this option? What dangers and risks does Pakistan face in adopting it? How much of the technology is indigenized?
What is the global trend? How does the world manage the dangers from nuclear accidents and nuclear waste? Which other options of energy production offer any good alternatives? The talk will address these questions.

When a muon bound in an atom decays, there is a small probability that the daughter electron remains bound. That probability is evaluated. Surprisingly, a significant part of the rate is contributed by the negative energy component of the wave function. In this talk, I will explain how one can calculate this probability and also compare our result with the existing literature.

"What Time is It? Where Am I" is the title of Dr. Asad Abidi's public lecture scheduled for 6 pm on 22 December 2021, in 10-201, the SSE Building. The talk explains how the 7 billion smartphones and 24 satellites can track time and position with sub-second and sub-centimeter accuracies. This is the technology of GPS. The lecture is open for everyone and is free.

About the speaker:

Asad Abidi received his BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College, London in 1976, and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. He worked at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill until 1985, and then joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles, where he is Distinguished Chancellor's Professor of Electrical Engineering. With his students, he has developed many of the radio circuits and architectures that enable today's mobile devices. Among other awards, Professor Abidi has received the 2008 IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in Solid-State Circuits and the Best Paper Award from the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits in 2012. The University of California, Berkeley's Department of EECS recognized him as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2015. He was elected Fellow of IEEE in 1996, Member of the US National Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of TWAS, the world academy of sciences. Professor Abidi holds the Abdus Salam Chair at the SBASSE School of Science & Engineering, LUMS, Lahore.
