About the speaker:

Dr. Silvio Franz is currently Professor of Physics at the University of Paris-Sud where he is associated with Laboratoire de Physique Statistique et Modèles Statistiques (LPTMS). He obtained his PhD from Sapienza Università di Roma in 1992. He has held various research and teaching positions at the École Normale Supérieure, the University of Oxford, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (NORDITA), and the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

Dr. Sarmad Abbasi was born in Khairpur Mir's, Sindh, and finished his 12th grade from Public School Hyderabad. He continued studying mathematics and theoretical computer science first at the University of Georgia and then at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, eventually obtaining a Ph. D in computer science. For the past twenty years, he has taught at various universities in Pakistan. He has been keenly interested in science, the philosophy of science, and its teaching. He is currently launching Math-Cat, a YouTube channel to promote mathematics and theoretical computer science. Dr. Sarmad is also affiliated with Educative, an EdTech company. During his spare time, he conducts original research in both mathematics and theoretical computer science. He reads philosophy and literature, and at times lectures about them.

About the speaker:

Dr. Nabeel Aslam was born and raised in Germany. He studied physics at the University of Mainz (Germany) and completed his studies in 2012. He then moved to Stuttgart (Germany) for his PhD in the institute of Prof. Joerg Wrachtrup. After earning his PhD degree in 2018, he joined the Department of Physics at the Harvard University as a Postdoctoral fellow in the labs of Mikhail Lukin and Hongkun Park.

Dr. Mansoor Ur Rehman will be giving a talk titled “Big Roll with a Super Cousin of Neutrinos” on October 15, 2021 at 3pm via Zoom.

He is currently associated with Quaid e Azam University, Islamabad as an Associate Professor of Physics.

Biography

Dr. Dalaver H. Anjum received his PhD Degree in Physics in the year of 2002 from the University at Albany-Sate University of New York, Albany, New York, USA. Currently, he is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics of Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, UAE. His main research interests include characterizing the structure and properties of materials at nanoscales by using TEM. Overall, he has the experience of carrying out the TEM analysis of nanomaterials from both industry and academia. He has authored/co-authored 245 publications spanning various fields of Science & Engineering including Materials Science, Electronics & Photonics, Catalysis, Bioscience, Energy-Storage, Solar Cell, Polymer Science, and Water Desalination.

Fiza Mumtaz (PhD student) will be talking about “Manipulation of the Positive Temperature Coefficient of Resistivity and Double Schottky Barrier Formed at the Grain Boundary in Bifeo3 through Systematic Substitutions” in the next Student Seminar Series by the Department of Physics. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad, Director Experimental High Energy Physics, National center for Physics

Biography:

Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad did his PhD in Experimental High Energy Physics on Atlas experiment at the University of Freiburg in Germany in February 2004. After that, at CERN, he worked on Atlas experiment for Academia Sinica Taiwan for a period of three years. From early 2007 till September 2012, he worked as research scientist at Stony Brook University. Since October 2012, he has been working on CMS experiment at NCP/Islamabad and was appointed as Director Experimental High Energy Physics Department in 2014. Dr. Ashfaq has been convener of the CMS single top quark physics group, convener of the electron/photon calibration group on Atlas experiment during the Higgs discovery era and member of the CMS Conference Committee. Currently, he is member of the CMS Theses Committee, member of the CMS Silicon Sensor Expert Panel and member of the CMS Tracker Upgrade Steering Group. For the benefit of young researchers, he has been regularly organizing particle physics activities in Pakistan and abroad such as School on LHC Physics and AEPSHEP (Asia-Europe-Pacific School of High-Energy Physics).

Biography

Ahsan Zeb is currently a full time faculty member at the Department of Physics, Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) , Islamabad. Prior to joining QAU, he worked as Post-doc researcher at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of St. Andrews, UK. Ahsan has also been associated with the National Centre for Physics, Islamabad 2007-2018.
