  • Baseline eye test was conducted for Class 3B & 4 Laser users.The laser baseline eye exam is a mandatory medical pre-assessment for all faculty, staff and students working with Class 3b and Class 4 lasers. These tests will held periodically for laser users in order to establish a baseline for which any potential ocular damage related to laser activities can be assessed.

  • Compressed gas cylinders are extensively used in SSE labs and ensurance of its safety should our top priority. A hydrostatic test will determine whether there are any cylinder leaks, faulty components and how the cylinder performs under extreme pressure.Hydrotesting certificate has made mandatory part of compressed gas cylinders procurement from the vendor.

  • Preparation is the key to an effective response to workplace fires. Fire drills help prepare everyone to respond quickly, calmly, and safely. 
    As per SSE’s Fire Emergency Response, our facilities & engineering, and security departments play a critical role in evacuating the building and firefighting using fire extinguishers, internal hose reels, and fire hydrants until external emergency services arrive. The SSE building is equipped with a fire hydrant system (including four fire hydrants at each side of the building) connected with a high-pressure fire pump as per NFPA standards.

  • In labs, please ensure the chemical waste is disposed of in fewer capacity bottles and shift the 80L big drums to Waste Management Lab. Low capacity (e.g., 5L and less ) has low risk in case of spillage, aerosol generation and in case of flammable waste, we should reduce the flammable levels. 


    Some recommended bottles (Note: these should be labelled as waste, including the type of waste, e.g. acid waste, base waste, oxidizer waste, flammable waste etc.) and should be placed in secondary containment trays.

  • As per laboratory best practices, negative pressure should be maintained in labs at all times. Potentially harmful fumes, vapors, and particulate matter can escape from the containment of the laboratory room unless the room air pressure is negative to adjacent non-laboratory areas, hence preventing the people and the environment. An exhaust duct is installed in the central lab wing connecting all labs. Volume control dampers are installed on all connection points (in each lab), which can be controlled as per requirement and system design. This exhaust duct is extended to SSE’s roof and connected with an exhaust fan (capacity: 1500 CFM), and the exhaust fan outlet is further connected with an air stack to attain better air dilution.

  • A flashback arrestor is a safety device designed to stop a flame in its tracks. It is therefore used to prevent flashback into cylinders or pipework. Flashback arrestors have been installed on the flammable gas cylinders in the chemistry and chemical engineering department.

  • It is observed that front(entrance door - path) is being used for movement of material/gas cylinders with the help of hand lift trolleys as it is designated for movement of people only. Frequent trolley movement is damaging the entrance tiles. Damaged tiles create fall hazard(tripping), which increases the likelihood of fall injury. Please support in preventing this issue and only use designated back door to transfer material with the help of hand lift trolleys.

Fire equipment misuse needs to be avoided and should be used for fire fighting only. Emergency exits should kept clear all the time. No storage should be placed at / nearby emergency exits and electrical panels.
