He will talk about case of the irreducible polynomial X6-2 to unveil mysteries of Galois Correspondence. Prof. Rached Mneimné has his research interests in Non-Commutative Harmonic Analysis in Semi-Simple Lie Groups and their Homogeneous Spaces, and Representation Theory of Lie algebras. He has also authored books for graduate and undergraduate students mixing Higher Linear Algebra to Finite Groups and Analytic Geometry.

We are pleased to welcome our guest speaker Prof. Jan Draisma from the University of Bern, Switzerland, to talk about ‘Infinite-Dimensional Geometry’ in our upcoming seminar on Monday March 29, 2021 at 4:00 PM PST via zoom in J. Conway Spirited Mathematics Seminar Series. Prof. Jan Draisma has his research interests concerning the interplay between combinatorics, statistics, and algebraic geometry.      

He discusses the problem of the breakdown of most theorems in finite-dimensional algebraic geometry in infinite dimensions. His talk highlights that some finite-dimensional algebraic geometry theorems & results survive when a sufficiently large symmetry group is imposed along with some examples. His presentation includes some applications to algebraic statistics, tensor decomposition, algebraic combinatorics.

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi, talk to their friends about math, and to eat pie.

The department of Mathematics LUMS, in collaboration with COMSATS university Islamabad and IBA Sukkur, is organizing the second "3-minute thesis competition (math)" on the 15th of March as part of the (approximate) Pi Day celebrations.

The competition is for research-based masters and doctoral students who are working in any area that involves math and / or its applications. The winners of the competition will be decided by the jury.

 

What it is about:

• An 80,000-word thesis takes 9 hours to present. Can you present your thesis in 3 minutes, and that too with just 1 slide?
• Competitors use one static slide to explain the breadth and significance of their graduate research to a non-specialist audience within 3 minutes.

Eligibility:

Masters’ or Doctoral students pursuing research in any area that involves math and/or its applications. Students from all over Pakistan are welcome.

Benefits:

1. It helps you develop communication and public speaking skills.
2. It enables you to communicate complicated research ideas in simple terms.
3. As mathematics frequently interact and work with non-mathematicians in industry, this competition will help you to communicate with a non-technical audience.
4. It will enhance your CV and the profile of your work.

Rules:

1. Only a single, static PowerPoint slide is permitted.
2. No slide transitions, animations or movement of any kind are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
3. No additional electronic media (e.g., sound and video files) are permitted.
4. No additional props (e.g., costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
5. Presentations are limited to a maximum of 3 minutes. Participants that exceed 3 minutes will be disqualified.
6. Presentations are to be in spoken word (i.e., no poems, raps or songs).

In the upcoming J. Conway Spirited Mathematics Seminar Series, Dr. Muhammad Usman will be talking about “Traces via Spectral Shift Function”. Dr. Usman belongs from the Department of Mathematics at SBASSE LUMS and has his research interests in spectral theory of differential operators and quantum graphs. In particular, he is interested in the self-adjoint extensions, trace formulae and spectral bounds.

Dr. Peter M. Hines talks about ‘Shuffles, Operads, and Associahedra’ in a new seminar series by the Mathematics Department at SBASSE, LUMS. This talk is about how the intuition of 'shuffling together decks of cards', commonly used as a metaphor for 'interleaving of processes', may be used to study structures in pure mathematics. 

This talk is designed to be accessible to anyone with some background in pure mathematics. It assumes some familiarity with the basics of topics such as modular arithmetic, groups / groupoids, homomorphisms, topologies, continuity, etc., but does not require any prior knowledge of operads, associahedra, or category theory. 

Prof. Peter Hines works at the York University UK and his research interests are in using Category Theory as a unifying principle to visualize the structures in common to a range of fields, from logic, pure mathematics, and theoretical computer science to quantum computing, cryptography, linguistics & Cognitive Science.
