The workshop will focus on three key streams of lectures:

1. Machine Learning for Materials Design
2. Topological Data Analysis
3. Analysis of Time Series

Each topic will be covered by subject experts, followed by interactive exercises and tutorial sessions to provide hands-on experience and deepen understanding.

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi, talk to their friends about math, and to eat pie.

The department of Mathematics LUMS is organizing the third "3-minute thesis competition (math)" on the 24th of April as part of the (approximate) Pi Day celebrations. The competition is for research-based masters and doctoral students who are working in any area that involves math and / or its applications. The winners of the competition will be decided by the jury.

What it is about

- An 80,000-word thesis takes 9 hours to present. Can you present your thesis in 3 minutes, and that too with just 1 slide?

- Competitors use one static slide to explain the breadth and significance of their graduate research to a non-specialist audience within 3 minutes.

Eligibility

Masters’ or Doctoral students pursuing research in any area that involves math and/or its applications. Students from all over Pakistan are welcome.

3. As mathematics frequently interact and work with non-mathematicians in industry, this competition will help you to communicate with a non-technical audience.

Rules

1. Only a single, static PowerPoint slide is permitted.
2. No slide transitions, animations or movement of any kind are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
3. No additional electronic media (e.g., sound and video files) are permitted.
4. No additional props (e.g., costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
5. Presentations are limited to a maximum of 3 minutes. Participants that exceed 3 minutes will be disqualified.
6. Presentations are to be in spoken word (i.e., no poems, raps or songs).

Professor Jürgen Herzog, a distinguished mathematician at Universität Duisburg-Essen, Germany, has made substantial contributions to commutative algebra. With over 250 papers and several influential books to his credit, Herzog has left an indelible mark on the field. Collaborating with Winfried Bruns, he authored "Cohen-Macaulay Rings" (1993), exploring the fundamental importance of these rings and their connections to determinantal rings and rings of invariants. Alongside Takayuki Hibi, Herzog co-authored "Monomial Ideals" (2011), providing a comprehensive overview of the intersection between commutative algebra and finite multi-sets, simplicial complexes, and graphs. His interest in computational methods is evident in "Gröbner Bases in Commutative Algebra" (2012), co-authored with Viviana Ene. In "Binomial Ideals" (2018), Herzog, Hibi, and Hidefumi Ohsugi jointly contributed to the exploration of binomial ideals. Jürgen Herzog's extensive body of work, comprising numerous papers and influential books, stands as an invaluable resource, enriching the realms of algebra, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics.

About the John Conway Spirited Seminar Series: The John Conway Spirited Seminar series was started in 2021 by the Department of Mathematics at Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering-LUMS, Pakistan. These seminars allow mathematicians from all over the World to indulge in productive discussions on recently evolved theories, expositions, and research. These seminars are purposefully kept online (through Zoom) to avoid the logistics limitations of inviting a speaker from the mathematically developed World and provide a latitude for researchers and students to benefit from these seminars. Almost all the talks are recorded with the speaker's prior consent, and these recorded talks are available on the website. Stay connected with recent developments through seminars is highly important for cultivating effective ideas. Though John Conway never visited Pakistan, it is an endeavor to live his spirited enthusiasm for promoting mathematics. It is a humble tribute to his grand legacy and spirited attitude to promoting mathematical discussions. We invite all mathematicians, young researchers, and students to these seminars.     

In 1972, Hugh Montgomery proposed a conjecture regarding the asymptotic behavior of the distribution of spacing between the zeros of the Riemann zeta function. A serendipitous encounter with Freeman Dyson at the Institute of Advanced Study resulted in an unexpected discovery about the profound connection between the pair correlation functions of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function and the eigenvalues of random matrices. This connection sparked extensive research at the crossroads of number theory and mathematical physics. In this talk, we will explore Montgomery's conjecture and its consequences.

Stefeno Luzzatto received his PhD in Dynamical Systems from the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste and the Instituto de Matematica Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) in Rio de Janeiro, under the supervision of Marcelo Viana an Jacob Palis in 1995. He was a postdoc at the Mathematics Institute at Warwick University from 1995 to 1999 and a lecturer, senior lecturer and reader from 2000 at Imperial College London where he co-founded the Dynamical Systems group DynamIC. In 2009 he had the privilege of moving to the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste where he coordinated the activities in Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory within the Mathematics Section.

His research is in the area of Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory or more specifically in the "Stochastic properties of deterministic dynamical systems". This has to do with the fact that many dynamical systems are "chaotic" in the sense that their short-term behavior is quite unpredictable but statistically well behaved, which allows us to have fairly reliable long-term statistical information and predictions.

He is involved in the organization of many schools and workshop both in Trieste and elsewhere, including in developing countries, and of supporting mathematicians working with few resources and difficult conditions. Recently, as a Scientific Coordinator of the International Mathematics Master (IMM) he was instrumental in the launch of first pilot project in Lahore, Pakistan.

Dr. Dar did his PhD from Technische Universität, Dresden (Germany). During PhD, he worked on various methods to optimally solve an NP-hard problem of discrete optimization, known as the Minimum Connectivity Inference (MCI) problem. This problem has appeared in different scientific fields of applied nature like structural biology, engineering and computer science. His past work also consists of the simulation-based tests in which different mathematical models are solved by using solvers like CPLEX®

The interaction between respiratory diseases of influenza and pneumonia is vital to understanding how coinfection might affect the transmission of pneumonia. We formulate an ordinary differential equation-based model to analyze the qualitative behavior of influenza and pneumonia coinfection. We determine the effective reproduction number and show that disease-free, boundary, and endemic equilibria are locally and globally stable in the absence of coinfection. Further, the model undergoes a backward bifurcation in the presence of the coinfection. Epidemiologically, this means that to eliminate disease, it may not be sufficient to bring the reproduction number below one. We then present numerical simulations to support the analytical results. 

Dr. Hassam did his PhD from University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany. His research interest includes partial differential equations, mathematical theory of elasticity, extended generalized continuum, elastic waves, surface wave theory, matrix analysis.
