Abstract
Smart devices are growing exponentially, and we live in the age of information and data. 5G and IoT got a lot of attention in the past few years. 5G ensures more speed and bandwidth to wireless devices. The present trend shows that billions of IoT devices will share and process a lot of data within few years. It is possible due to the better channel encoding and data transmission. Error-correcting codes are the backbone of advanced communication systems. In IoT nodes, energy consumption is one of the primary concerns. This work presents different schemes and hardware implementation aspects of polar codes, a particular class of error-

correcting codes. Some methodologies are presented through which the polar codes can be implemented in energy efficient manner. The mathematical model of Polar codes and the working of a few encoders and decoders are discussed in detail. The idea of variable quantization at the hardware level is proposed. Finally, FPGA implementation of the polar code SC decoder shows that variable quantization saves hardware resources and hardware power consumption and can be extended to other existing decoders.
