Induction is a powerful construction tool, both in elementary and in advanced mathematics. The talk will illustrate this basic observation. More precisely, we will see how the remarkable integrity and periodicity properties of the Somos sequence and the Coxeter-Conway friezes find a beautiful unification and generalisation in the recent theory of cluster algebras introduced by Sergei Fomin and Andrei Zelevinsky. Apart from induction, we will only need addition, multiplication and division of integer coefficient polynomials in finitely many variables.
