Report on the second “3-minute thesis competition (mathematics)” 

The department of mathematics, LUMS in collaboration with COMSATS University Islamabad and IBA Sukkur organized the second “3-minute thesis competition (math)” which was held virtually on the 15th of March 2021, as part of the (approximate) Pi day celebrations. The competition was unique in the sense that three of the Pakistani universities collaborated to hold this math event, which does not happen very often. The competition was also unique in the sense that it provided graduate students from all over Pakistan an opportunity to talk about their research to a wider math community.
 
The audience witnessed some amazing and exciting math talks. Mathematicians from 22 universities gathered to listen to some wonderful talks by 27 speakers from 8 universities across Pakistan.  

Prof. Sultan Sial (LUMS) and Prof. Muhammad Ahsan (LUMS) judged the contest. 

First position awarded to:

  1. Sadia Khaliq from Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad on her presentation on “Acoustic Black Holes” 
  2. Ayesha Siddiqa from Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad on her presentation on “Information Loss Paradox”  
  3. Iqra Khan from COMSATS University Islamabad on her presentation on “Construction and Degeneration of Varieties Arising from Graphs”  

Second position awarded to: 

  1. Roit Lal from Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad on his presentation on “White Holes as Remnants”  
  2. Hafiz Fareed Ahmed from COMSATS University Islamabad on his presentation on “Classification of covid-19 via homology of ct scans”  
  3. Muhammad Danish Zia from LUMS on his presentation on “On some spectral and scattering problems for differential operators on quantum star graphs”  
  4. Unsa Aas from IBA Sukkur on her presentation on “The residence time estimation of settling particles in a surface layer”

Third position awarded to: 

  1. Muhammad Zargam Hamid from UMT Lahore on his presentation on “Cryptography by using graph theory” 
  2. Rida Kalsoom from COMSATS University Islamabad on her presentation on “Numerical Study of SEIR Modeling for COVID-19 Epidemic”  

  
The winners will receive shields and certificates, and the participants will receive certificates of participation.
