RISE 3rd Cohort Highlights (2025)
Through the RISE program, SBASSE, LUMS opens its doors every summer to high school students, inviting them to explore the world of research before they even step into university life. The RISE internship is more than just an introduction to STEM. It's a chance to spark curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and help students develop the kind of problem-solving skills that will serve them no matter what they choose to do in the future. Throughout the program, they work closely with LUMS faculty who guide them not only with their expertise but by showing them the ins and outs of real-world research, giving them a taste of what it truly means to be a part of the discovery process.
On July 10, 2025, a group of talented interns embarked on a four-week journey at SBASSE, where they were divided into two distinct streams: the research stream and the planned activities stream. Under the mentorship of LUMS faculty, these interns worked closely with researchers and lab instructors, immersing themselves in the academic world and gaining firsthand experience of what it means to be part of an intellectual community. They also had the opportunity to attend 13 guest lectures including lectures by Dr. Amal Kasry, Chief of Section of Basic Sciences, Research Innovation and Engineering, UNESCO, Paris, Dr. Yasir Niaz, CTO Punjab Safe City Authority (GoP), and Prof. Dr. Jianjun Wang, Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing. These conversations fostered curiosity, pushing boundaries, encouraging exploration, and guiding these young minds to unlock their full potential.
The research labs at LUMS became more than just spaces for experimentation; they transformed into classrooms where interns learned about aspirin synthesis, crime investigation, dyes and pigments. Throughout their journey, the interns delved into a wide array of topics, from quantum physics, green chemistry to cancer research, expanding their knowledge and honing their skills in diverse fields.
The culmination of their hard work was celebrated at the RISE Culminating Event on August 11, 2025, where the interns had the opportunity to present their research findings. This event demonstrated not only the knowledge they had acquired but also their meaningful contributions to ongoing projects. SBASSE, LUMS is proud to have hosted such bright, eager minds. As we look to the future, we are excited about the continued growth of the RISE program and the lasting impact it will have on the next generation of researchers and innovators.
