PhD Electrical Engineering

Overview

The Electrical Engineering (EE) Department at LUMS, the largest at SBASSE, started in 2008 by offering a very rigorous and modernised undergraduate programme which is accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council. Today, the Department has about 400 undergraduate students and 14+ full-time faculty members. The first batch of undergraduate students graduated in June 2012. EE department had reached critical mass in research active full-time faculty and established research clusters in all important areas of EE. In 2012, the department started offering new MS and PhD programmes; the previously offered programme in Computer Engineering has phased out but is covered under the larger umbrella of Electrical Engineering.

The graduate programmes in Electrical Engineering give students both a strong foundation and specialisation in three important areas of electrical engineering: Communication and Networks, Embedded Systems and Electronics, and Signal and Image Processing. Moreover, there is adequate opportunity to work with faculty and take courses in other important topics for which course streams are not being offered currently. These include control systems, robotics, electromagnetic, optics and energy systems. Students are also strongly encouraged to collaborate with other disciplines at SBASSE such as Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Chemistry.

The department hosts a growing research active full-time faculty with 14+ PhDs from the world’s top institutes. The EE faculty is committed to solving important issues pertaining to a wide range of subjects such as Communication Technologies, Power Systems, Embedded Microelectronics, Optics, VLSI Design, Robotics and Control Systems. Since the inception of the Department, the faculty and their academic staff (most of whom are LUMS graduate students) have published 25+ peer reviewed research articles in the highest ranked international journals published by IEEE, ACM, IET, IEE and IOP and presented their research findings at dozens of top tier conferences in their respective fields. Faculty members have also visited and maintained research collaborations with several top academic institutes of the world; hosted professors and students from institutes within Pakistan and abroad and organised workshops, conferences and seminars both locally and at the international level.

The PhD Electrical Engineering programme offers five specialization areas:

  • Communication Systems and Networks
  • Signal and Image Processing
  • Systems and Controls
  • Electronics and Embedded systems
  • Optics and Electromagnetics

It is expected that specialization in "Electronic Materials and Devices" and "Energy and Power Systems" will be offered in the near future.

Structured into various research clusters and labs, the Department has collaborated and obtained funding from local and international industry including the likes of National Instruments, Mentor Graphics and Mitsubishi. It has also secured competitive grants from agencies including Higher Education Commission (HEC), National ICT R&D Fund and German Academic Exchange (DAAD). Some faculty members have served as consultants for several government agencies and non-government research organisation including the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Punjab Irrigation Dept (PID), Cleaner Production Institute (CPI), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Water Management Institute (IWMI).

* The medium of instruction at LUMS is English for all degree programmes offered. Assessments are accepted in English only.

Note:
Full Tuition Fee Waiver and a Monthly Stipend* awarded to all admitted students (for up to four years).
*Subject to adequate academic performance
