The LUMS Physlab team, led by Dr. Sabieh Anwar, Associate Professor of Physics recently completed a science sharing programme at the National University of Technology (NUTECH), Islamabad. NUTECH approached Physlab for technical support and provision of hardware and systems, including equipment for their newly built physics laboratory.
The project consisted of crafting seven experimental setups: craters in sand; Newton’s cradle observed by video tracking; oscillations observed through webcam; rotational mechanics and angular momentum; collisions on an air track and conservation of momentum; dynamics of water discharge through a cylinder and energy conservation in two dimensions.
The Physlab team successfully crafted the setups within an intense three month period. The equipment included home-grown data loggers (Physlogger), handcrafted apparatuses for rotational mechanics, homebuilt mass balances (Physload) and a linear air track with 3D printed gliders. In addition, there were homemade photogates for the study of conservation of momentum, webcams and software codes for video tracking simple harmonic motion, as well as studying the mechanisms of crater formations and observing the transfer of energy and momentum in Newton’s cradle. All of the locally developed hardware has been crafted with the support of Qosain Scientific, under HEC’s Technology Development Fund programme.
