An orientation for the newly admitted graduate (MS and PhD) students of the Batch 2017 was organized by the Office of the Dean, SBASSE, on 24th August 2017 and 25th August 2017. It was a two day event, aimed at facilitating the new students with the school, their respective department and the facilities that would be available for them during their academic stay at LUMS.
The session kicked off with registration of the new students in the basement of SBASSE Complex. The students were issued smart cards and directed towards the auditorium, 9-B2, where an hour-long Welcome Session was arranged for them. The Dean, SBASSE, Dr. Shahid Masud addressed the new students and briefly introduced them to the graduate programmes as well as numerous facilities being offered at LUMS. Also present at the occasion were Dr. Basit Shafiq (the Convenor of the SBASSE Graduate Programme Committee), Dr. Basit Yameen (Chair, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering) and Dr. Falak Sher (Chair, Physics Department).
After the session, students were taken on a campus tour by representatives of their respective departments, which was followed by a meeting with their Departmental Graduate Program Coordinators (DGPC) and other faculty members over a tea session. The students familiarized themselves with the place they would be calling 'home' for the next few years.
The students were invited to attend an information session about the facilities available for them at the LUMS Library. The session was presented by Mr. Waris Ali Arslan and Mr. Muhammad Zeeshan. Finally, another information session was arranged for the new students by the Student Council, in which the students got to know about how they can be a part of the Council and contribute towards betterment of the LUMS community. The representatives of the Student Council, who were present at the session were Ali Haider Khan (President, Student Council), Asad Ullah Khan (General Secretary), Haris Siraj (PhD Rep), Ahmer Latif (SSE Graduate Rep) and Iqtidar Ali (SSE Graduate Rep).
On the second day of the Orientation session, the students were invited to an important two-hour session for Zambeel training by the teams of the Office of the Registrar (including Mr. Arslan Ashiq and Ms. Sana Ayub Khan) and the Information Systems and Technology (IST). The coordinators of each of the six departments of SBASSE were also present at the training session.
